Chapter 8
“My Wife Has Been Shot”
At around 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 16, Sara Mann, who had been at the Anderson gun show most of the day, left the building. She arrived at the Garton residence a little after 5:30 P.M. and found the front door open but didn’t think that was unusual. Even the fact that the television was on with a low volume didn’t faze her. Sara knew that she, Dale, Carole, Todd and Norman were all supposed to go out to dinner soon, and she surmised that Carole had just stepped out for a while and left the television on. Sara sat down at Dale’s computer and began playing the video game Centipede.
Dale Gordon arrived at the Garton home about fifteen minutes later, walked in and gave Sara a hug. He was mildly surprised that she had entered the house by herself with no one else there. He knew she didn’t have a key. He even asked why the television was on if she was playing a video game. She told him she had found it that way.
Dale said, “I was worried at that point someone had robbed the house. I went from the kitchen area right by the master bedroom.” Without knowing it, he had passed within a few feet of Carole’s bloody body lying on the floor.
Dale continued his remembrance. “I went into my room. I saw my guns sitting around and I thought, ‘Well, nobody came in and robbed them.’ As soon as I saw my guns there, I was pretty much satisfied because they were out in the open. I remember my thoughts were to call Norman, but I didn’t do that. We were all going to dinner that night. I kind of wondered where Carole was. She was supposed to be there because we were all going. She knew what time I was going to get off work.”
Dale walked back toward the living room, but he stopped once again by the entrance to the master bedroom. Once again he was within feet of Carole Garton, but he did not see her lying on the darkened floor. Before Dale moved another inch, Todd arrived home and greeted him. Todd had a quizzical look on his face and asked, “Where’s Carole?”
Dale answered, “I don’t know.”
Dale took a few steps toward the living room while Todd walked into the master bedroom. He gazed at a shape on the floor. It was a sight he had been waiting for—Carole lying in a pool of blood. But when he looked closer, he was shocked. He thought she was still breathing. It is highly unlikely that Carole was still alive after so many gunshots at close range. Todd knelt down and listened for a heartbeat. He would admit later that he was so rattled by the actual sight of her body on the floor, he didn’t know if it was her heart beating or his. The important thing at the time was that he assumed she was still alive and he was furious at Norman Daniels.
